Just because you pay someone, doesn’t make them a professional designer. And no, I don’t think you need to pay someone a lot of money to get quality design: you just have to educate yourself a little bit.

When you’re hiring a designer, it’s not just about his portfolio or how the work looks to you. You need to learn the rules first. You need to check out my gallery and see what professional book design looks like. Does that designer’s interior book design look like all those other books? Is it as clean and polished? Or is he breaking some rules and doing things differently?

With book design, doing things differently and new is never a sign of an experienced designer. Being clever and doing things like putting headers and page numbers in a weird place just for the sake of being novel will disorient readers.

There really aren’t many rules to book design. If you download my free templates you’ll see I can make lots of style variations with just three fonts, and they look amazing (though some are too busy and distracting). Learning how to design minimally, and learning how to appreciate the white space between the text, is what truly separates quality designers from amateurs.

So before you hire somebody, get the templates. Take a look at the design gallery. Make sure your book cover is brilliant and that your chapter heading fonts match your cover (so important, but so rarely done by indie authors! It’s such a giveaway that the book was poorly produced by random designers not collaborating).

Converting to eBook Formats

Poetry books need to be converted into .epub for most eBook platforms, and .mobi for Amazon Kindle. You can use various tools for this, such as Calibre, or hire a professional to assist you.

So if you put a smaller image in, it will look tiny.

HOWEVER – Kindle/Amazon charges a delivery fee for delivering your ebook, and if you have a lot of images, your file size will go up, and they’ll charge you for it. If you have a lot of images, you may not be able to price at 99cents – because it won’t be enough to cover the minimum deduction they want to take from you. Worth knowing.

For print books, it’s fine to add images, and generally, if it looks good to you when previewing the PDF on your computer, it’s going to look fine in print. You’ll probably get a warning that some images aren’t 300DPI, which happens depending how you saved to PDF (you can check your settings for that), but even if they aren’t 300DPI they will probably print fine – unless they do look unfocused or blurry when previewing. Then you need better images.

Also, if you want your images to be full bleed and extend to the margins of your book, you need to check that option in Createspace. You probably don’t want to do that, but it can be fun sometimes, for example to have full page images as chapter or section breaks.

Adding images into your book formatting

If you have a historical memoir or something, maybe you’ll have a “spread” of images on a few pages in the center. If you try to add images throughout your whole book, they’ll almost always be distracting from the story and interrupt the experience. However – I’m not talking about a full page image spread behind the chapter titles, or little chapter heading graphics. Generally, those elements are repeated (same file used over and over) so they don’t make the file size huge.

Also keep in mind, printing color images print on demand (POD) will be crazy expensive and isn’t really feasible, so you’ll probably need to consider grayscale/black and white images for the interior (if you have to, you can toss a few color images on the back cover instead). Also, it’s really tricky to add images into Microsoft Word; seriously there are memes about it.

But there are some formatting tools that make it a lot easier; unless you want to hire someone to do the typesetting in Indesign, I recommend these:

Open up the epub and look at the first paragraph of chapter one. Go into code view. You’ll need to make a special span class around the first letter of the first word, and that span class will be inside the regular paragraph titles.

Mine looks like this (my first paragraph main body style is “block 14”. I’ve bolded all the code.

Then I have to go into my stylesheet and add the details for that span class, which looks like this:

You’ll need to play with those figures to get the dropcap to display exactly where you want it, and how large. Also make sure you’ve added the right font into your ebook, if you’re using a special font, by adding this at the top of your stylesheet.

But let’s be real, you don’t want to do all that!

Jutoh is an ebook formatting tool that lets you make dropcaps. And it’s function. But Vellum is so much cleaner and more user-friendly, and you can easily change the dropcap fonts and style.
