I’ve saved the Word templates as .doc and .docx, but you will need Microsoft Word to open them. There’s also a .indd file for InDesign, if you have it, and a “getting started” PDF to walk you through it, though it may be faster to use the video above.
These book formatting templates have several potential design choices and fonts: pick the one you want and remove the rest. For most adult books, a clean, understated design is best – you’ll also want to match your book cover design if possible.

Welcome! If you somehow landed here first, you might be trying to format your own book for kindle, or preparing a PDF for publishing. Formatting a book is pretty difficult, because software like InDesign is expensive and old-school, and Microsoft Word is notoriously a dumpster fire for long documents.
Over the past decade I’ve tried to make that easier, and this site is one of many I maintain for indie authors. You can download the free book formatting templates and they should help, but I also have a bunch of videos and tutorials so you can troubleshoot. If you’re looking for an instant solution… people have been trying for years to create one. Vellum is the closest thing that can handle really great print and ebook formatting; Atticus is another valiant attempt.
But nothing is perfect, and if you really want to just learn to do it yourself and stick with Microsoft Word (that’s what I do, and I’ve published dozens of books), I have a premium bundle of formatting templates in the “master package” and some detailed tutorials to make you an expert in just a few hours.

Best Book Formatting Software
If you’re determined, here’s a video series on formatting your book in Microsoft Word. I usually write my books in MS Word and as long as you set up the chapter headers right, you can even upload the Word doc to Kindle and it will make a decent epub. Ebooks are usually simplified for devices so don’t fret if you can’t make your epub look just like your print book.
That said, if you want a nicer-looking book that’s truly professional – and save yourself hours of frustration – Vellum is the best book formatting software; I use it with “mac-in-cloud” on my PC, though it’s meant for Mac. Atticus is another option for PC users.
